Doisy & Dam | 5 Reasons Why You Should Eat Dark Chocolate

Turns out our very favourite food not only tastes good, but it does good too. Whether it’s Buttons, Truffles or our Nuttercups, dark chocolate has proven itself worthy of all of our love.

1. It boosts your memory and mood.
Feel great after nibbling on a square of dark chocolate? Remembered to pop dark chocolate on your shopping list? You’re not alone! Five out of eight studies (According to the journal Nutrition Reviews) show that consuming dark chocolate improved moods and showed ‘clear evidence of cognitive enhancement’. Don’t need to tell us twice.

2. Good for your gut.
Studies in Frontiers in Pharmacology show that during digestion, dark chocolate behaves like a prebiotic, a kind of fibre that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Plus, the more “good” bacteria in your digestive system, the better and more efficiently your body is able to absorb nutrients from all your food, and support a healthy and strong metabolism.

3. Clear skin.
What do copper, iron and magnesium all have in common? As well as being vitamins and minerals found in dark chocolate, they are all known to be benefical to your skin! Given we shed up to 40,000 skin cells per day, it’s essential that our body has all the nutrition it needs to repair and renew healthy and strong skin.

4. Improves blood sugar levels.
Eating chocolate might not sound like the best way to keep your blood sugars slow, but studies have shown that eating dark chocolate high in cacao helps the body metabolize the sugar glucose. Being able to metabolize sugar well helps avoid diabetes, meaning a little bit of dark chocolate can do a lot of good.

5. Nutritious and delicious.
Dark chocolate typically has fewer ingredients than its milk counterparts, and by not including dairy in the recipe, there’s more room for nutrient-dense cocoa. If you’re a fan of fibre, partial to potassium or keen on copper and calcium, dark chocolate is your one-stop-shop for getting micro-doses of all these key nutrients, ensuring your snacking is healthy, and great for your gut.

So in a (pea)nut shell, there are lots of reasons to choose dark chocolate. It has health and nutritional benefits, keeps your blood sugars in check, and is pretty dam tasty to boot. Sign us up.
